"DOOM" Themed Virtual Pinball Machine

Project type

Virtual Pinball Machine Build

Date

August 2023

Location

St. Louis, MO

Role

Lead Designer and Fabricator

Inspired by the first-person shooter series "Doom", this Virtual Pinball Machine was designed to be as menacing as the monsters you face in the game.

The cabinet was built from the ground up with custom details, art, and features. A powerful gaming PC runs the 3 screens and resides in the bottom of the machine. 7.1 channel surround feeds speakers and exciters placed in strategic locations throughout the machine to emulate the feel of real pinball.

For visual flare, I designed custom "Doom Slayer" speaker grilles, 3d printed them, and painted the symbol. The graphics used are game art assets from "Doom 2016" and "Doom Eternal" that I modified to fit the dimensions of the cabinet. The metal parts were restored with truck bed liner and sanded smooth, to give it a rugged finish but still comfortable to play on.

The virtual machine plays PinballFX3, PinballFX, and Virtual Pinball X (VPX), and is loaded with hundreds of pinball tables. My fiancé and I play in pinball leagues and tournaments, so we needed a way to practice tables at home that we do not own. With this virtual machine, we can play digital re-creations of the machines virtually to learn the shots and the rules of the games we are unfamiliar with.
